I have read the book. The book is great.
I have seen the movie. It isn't.
First of all, MacLachlan is far too old to be the main character Paul, the Guild is hardly even referred to when it should be in the foreground, the Emperor (Ferrer) is treated like a buffoon, all the Mentats are seen as drug addicts, Baron Harkonnen (McMillan) is overplayed WAY too badly to be seen as a threat, Sting just doesn't work out at all, the sets are too bland, the effects are a joke, the script doesn't just edit out parts of the book - it takes a machete to it and cuts out whole chunks that leave the rest unintelligible and Lynch's direction tries to ape Kubrick but comes up sadly short.
This is such a missed opportunity that it makes me sick to think about it. How can any fan of Herbert or the "Dune" saga seriously think this is worth anything more than skeet-shooting fodder? I'd rather drink a pitcher full of the Water of Life than sit through this mess again.
No stars. It isn't worth discussing anymore. Just feed all existing prints of "Dune" to a sand worm, someone - ANYONE.

So tired of everything being compared to GoT, especially Dune which is 54 years old. Also, freh-men not free-men. I have enjoyed dune since I was version is truly thanks for posting and mega thank you to spicediver for creating this extended masterpiece of sci fi genre. Sean Young was such a timeless beauty.
I don't know why people overeacts so much at Dune. First of all, it's a Lynch movie, and I'd even say it's his only movie involving some actual sense) what were you expecting? Nice and easy screwball comedy? Or maybe a lineal, comfortable plot? Second, anybody who has read Herbert's book might know that the book itself also lacks of logic at some points and exceeds of solemnity. So what? This is science fiction. I like how Lynch deals in an innovating (even if boring, sometimes) way with those complications, and he succeeds in giving us a completly different set of the usual sci-fi. I also do think that it is quite a good adaptation of the original book, except maybe for the ecology of the planet, which you'll find at the epilogue of the book and that was so, there is a lack of depth sometimes, I'd like to see the fremen's "plans" about the planet on the screen.
But I can do no objection to Lynch's way of doing things. The special effects are weird, the voices are weird, the dialogues are weird (although taken from the book) and, to finish, everything is weird, but absolutely amazing. And plus you've got all those wonderful actors popping here and there, Sean Young, Von Sydow and, hello Sting. A 10/10 for Lynch and sci-fi lovers, and, if you are not in one of those groups, then save yourself from what will be a sure disappointment.

That is a great additions to one of the best films ever, imagery is superb as is the I read the book first. Its got to be a new dune! Although I loved the last lynch outing I would be delighted to see a new directors twist. Lynch's Dune was brilliant. Looking forward to seeing the adaptations. Yeah we can basically replace it with super computers, which sounds like a much easier way. One of the best science fictions ever made imo. This one has been coming up in my recommendations and I always read, Dude, what happened to Earth. I am so psyched for these movies. I've read all the books apart from Winds of Dune The saga is one of the best and honest interpretations of humanity's potential and the risks involved with our evolution. Great. Fantastic. Beautiful. DUNE forever... HEVC was designed to substantially improve coding efficiency compared with H.264/MPEG-4 AVC HP, i.e. to reduce bitrate requirements by half with comparable image quality, at the expense of increased computational complexity. I never knew the mayor of Portland was so badass.
